Beginning 1st September 2019, Organizations are expected to stop collecting, using or disclosing customers' NRIC and other national identification numbers where it is not required under the law or necessary to establish or verify an individual's identity to a high degree of fidelity. In today's digital economy, indiscriminate collection or negligent handling of NRIC numbers / any other identification cards can increase the risk of unintended disclosure and may result in NRIC / ID numbers being misused for illegal activities such as identity theft or fraud.
